Installation cost
An ignition interlock device, also frequently referred to as a car breathalyzer, ranges in cost between $70 and $150 for installation. This fee is a one-time fee paid at the start of your lease period for the device to be installed into your vehicle. This fee is paid directly to the service center for the work done to complete your installation. The range of installation costs can fluctuate due to the following factors:
- Year, make and model of vehicle the device will be installed in
- Specific technological features of the vehicle such as auto start
- Shipping fees
- Any specific fees or taxes in accordance with state laws

The value of the largest service network
Intoxalock has over 3,800 locations across the nation where IIDs can be installed. We have more installation locations than any other ignition interlock provider and have a location within 15 miles of over 91% of our customers.
The value of Intoxalock technicians
All official Intoxalock technicians have been specially trained and certified to install IIDs. Our technicians ensure that not only is the device carefully installed and properly functioning, but also that your vehicle will not be impacted by the device once your IID requirements have been fulfilled and the device is removed. Choosing a competitor whose installers are not certified could result in additional expenses if the device is not installed properly or if the vehicle is damaged due to inexperience during installation or removal. If the device is not installed properly, you may miss work due to your vehicle being locked out, or by having to make an extra trip to get it fixed.
Ignition interlock devices are leased (or rented), not purchased. Intoxalock allows for either monthly or bi-weekly payment options, to help you manage the costs associated with ignition interlock devices. Payment options will need to be set up during the account set-up process in order to appear in the payment section of the Intoxalock Mobile App or in MyAccount.
IIDs typically cost between $60 and $90 per month. There are also some states that offer financial assistance for those who qualify.
The cost of your individual monthly lease payment will depend on the following factors:
- Length of time you need your device
- The model of device you are required to have according to your state law (GPS, camera, real-time reporting)
- The frequency of compliance reporting required by your home state
- Any specific fees or taxes in accordance with state laws
Intoxalock continuously monitors ignition interlock pricing industry-wide to ensure that we offer a competitive cost. Further, our company has state ignition interlock specialists available 24/7 that can answer your questions about your state requirements and provide you with a quote for your installation cost and your monthly lease amount.
Breaking down the monthly cost of an Intoxalock IID lease
The daily cost of having an Intoxalock ignition interlock device breaks down to about $3 per day each month. Comparably, this is less than a medium latte at a coffee shop, or a sandwich from a drive-through restaurant.
Can I buy a cheap breathalyzer?
When you’re looking to buy a cheap breathalyzer, it’s important to think about the accuracy of the device and the reliability of the device’s reading as it will impact the ability to start your car.
You pay for what you get is often true with breathalyzers. Cheap breathalyzers may be less accurate and require a higher degree of maintenance and more expensive models often have a greater level of accuracy.
Be sure to consider a few factors when making your decision on what breathalyzer to choose: accuracy, number of reviewers and nature of those reviews, ease of use of the device, as well as all costs associated with having and using a breathalyzer device in your car.
Comparing the cost of an IID to public transportation or ride shares
Depending on the state, the cost of a monthly lease for an IID can range from $60 – $90. Local bus passes can range in costs depending on the city, the reliability of arriving on time, and require a lot of travel time to arrive at one’s destination. In one large metropolitan city, an all-day bus pass runs $5 per person within the city routes. For the suburbs in the same city, rates can run up to $6.25 for just a one-way trip. If you are considering using a taxi or ride share service such as Uber or Lyft, you could also incur a higher expense than with an IID lease. During morning commute hours within a large city, a Lyft ride can run about $23 or more before tip, going one-way. Using a ride share app in larger cities could cost $50 or more per day if traveling during common commute hours.
