Methadone is a long-acting, synthetic opiate agonist, which acts in a way that is similar to other narcotic medications (which include morphine, opium, heroin, OxyContins, codeine, dilaudid, etc.). When used appropriately, it does not create euphoria, sedation, or an analgesic effect. A proper therapeutic maintenance dose is individually determined (based on body weight and opiate tolerance levels) and stops cravings, allowing a person to function “normally.” Methadone is different than heroin or morphine in that the body metabolizes it differently. When a person takes an appropriate amount of methadone regularly, it builds up and is stored in the body, thus creating a variety of advantages: Methadone keeps the person from going into withdrawal, keeps the person comfortable and free from craving street opioids, and it “blocks” the effects of street opioids.
