Be aware of how much it’s costing you to be in business and have a plan for how you will pay for these expenses during the first year of business as you build a client base.
Hiring an assistant. There will be a point at which you cannot do everything on your own. You may very well be working out of your home the first year and you may not need extra hands. But, at some point, it will end up costing you more to not have an assistant than it will cost to hire one. If you are doing everything on your own, there will be a limit to the number of clients you can take on, and a limit to the quality of service you can provide within the time you have. An assistant will take a lot of the small tasks off your plate and help keep the important things scheduled. A part time assistant is better than no assistant if you’re so busy that you’re dropping the ball with any of your clients.
Be consistent in communication and follow up. Managing your clients is as important as making sure bills get paid and the office door gets unlocked every morning. Regular follow up, professional emails and letters, and timely invoicing will ensure your clients will respect your business, know you care about their case, and keep your invoice on their to-do list.
