How to Avoid a DUI
There is never a good excuse to get behind the wheel after drinking. The risk of ruining your life, or somebody else’s, is way too high. All it takes is one mistake to earn yourself a lifetime of regret.
What’s worse is so many people come up with poor excuses to justify their drinking and driving. For example, let’s talk about Dave. Dave knows he is going to go out for drinks with his friends tonight. So, he decides that by the end of the night he is going to get a cab home and come back for his car later. But by the time the end of the night comes around Dave is tired, drunk, and lazy. He also spent more money than he expected, so he decides to save money on a cab and just drive home.
To avoid this situation, Dave could have planned his night better. Instead of driving, maybe he can find a sober driver for the night. If none of his friends are willing to be the designated driver, consider taking an Uber to the bar. The best rule of them here is, don’t take your car out when you know you will be drinking.
If you can avoid bringing your car, then you will never be in a situation in which you need to drive drunk. People recoil from this option because they see it as an extra expense. Getting an Uber ride to and from the bar can add another $20-$100 to their night out.
But the question is this, is an extra $50 a night worth your life? Or the life of a stranger? How about a family of four? People justify driving drunk by downplaying the risk they are taking. If people like Dave were totally aware of how much a DUI can cost them, they would be more than happy to spend some extra cash to make sure they get to and from the bar safely.
So what happens when Dave is already pulled over? He didn’t take any of the above advice and decided to drink and drive anyway. Well, the best chance Dave has to avoid a DUI is to understand his rights, and to completely comply with the officer.
