What is Methadone?

Methadone is a long-acting, synthetic opiate agonist, which acts in a way that is similar to other narcotic medications (which include morphine, opium, heroin, OxyContins, codeine, dilaudid, etc.). When used appropriately, it does not create euphoria, sedation, or an analgesic effect. A proper therapeutic maintenance dose is individually determined (based on body weight and opiate tolerance levels) and stops cravings, allowing a person to function “normally.” Methadone is different than heroin or morphine in that the body metabolizes it differently. When a person takes an appropriate amount of methadone regularly, it builds up and is stored in the body, thus creating a variety of advantages: Methadone keeps the person from going into withdrawal, keeps the person comfortable and free from craving street opioids, and it “blocks” the effects of street opioids. Methadone assisted therapy concentrates first and foremost on individual and group counseling to assist clients in learning about the disease of addiction, and acquire skills and tools to enable them to improve their lives in a variety of areas. CDP maintains a structured and supportive environment for those seeking to break out of the downward spiral of addiction.

What treatment options are available?

Detoxification

Medically supervised administration of methadone in progressively decreasing doses to eliminate physical dependency within 30 – 180 days. Detoxification reduces the severity of withdrawal symptoms for the individual addicted to drugs. Methadone is used because it can be administered orally, and it need be taken only once a day.

Methadone Maintenance

Medically supervised dose administered once per day, giving the client physiological stability and time to undergo the changes necessary to sustain a non-addictive lifestyle. Treatment in this component is based on a natural consequence system which rewards stable and responsible behavior with program privileges as the client progresses in treatment.
